History of the Jeep Wrangler JL 2018+
Posted by Jeep Federation Team on Oct 23rd 2017
The Jeep Wrangler has maintained a position for committed and most impressive off-road model in the entire Jeep lineup. With the present Wrangler JK and JK Unlimited versions in production over the past ten years, a new generation Wangler (Wrangler JL) is set to debut soon. Jeep will release a new 2018 model soon that is rumored to come complete with the conventional Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited options. This is one of the most expected SUVs of 2018 and hopefully, it will arrive by the end of the year. A new Wrangler Truck and a possibly new engine are in the mix too. A hybrid powertrain and the return of the Pentastar V-6 with a viable with a possible 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, turbo diesel engine is expected to replace the current 285-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with 5-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission.
The year
- Debut and weight: the all-new Wrangler JL will probably be produced in November at Jeeps Toledo plant and debut t the LA Show this year which means there is a chance to see the new generation before November runs out. No matter what kind of engine it carries, the Wrangler JL should be able to tow about 1587kg and have 500kg to the 600kg total capacity of payload. The heaviest trim for the Wrangler JL will probably be the Rubicon at nearly 2000kg with a 3.0L diesel engine and the lightest might be the Sport with around 1700kg and a 2.0L engine.
- Sneak peek of the look: where looks are concerned, Jeep might just keep the resemblance of preceding Wrangler models alive in the JL. The grille is expected to bulge out more, probably to meet crash safety standards for pedestrian needs. The turn signals are also located at the front of the fenders now, but everything else about the appearance of the Wrangler JL seems to be as before.
- Hard or soft top, 2 or 4door with removable door: hard and soft top variations are available and the Wrangler JL is rumored to have bot 2door and 4door options with these variations. The popularity of 4x4 has risen since the Wrangler JKU with 4dorrs was introduced and it seems Jeep would like to continue the trend. Jeeps trademark removable doors will remain available on this new Wrangler. Camouflage first models have been seen with the door hinges exposed which suggest the doors can come off easily. The leaked images also indicate hinges below the windshield which might be a clue that the Wrangler JL windshield can be folded down like the models before it. The hinges might just be an addition to aesthetics, so there is no confirmation there.
- Interior: the interior design for the Wrangler JK was quite practical, but the Wrangler JL is rumored to be even better. There are rumored options for a heated steering and double zone climate control. The newest UConnect infotainment system on Fiats Chrysler might be going into the Wrangler JL. The dashboard-mounted window switches might remain, which is a reimbursement of the removable door option he dashboard might match the exterior paint in standard or luxury fashion.
- Fresher more modern look: the Wrangler JL seems to maintain the roll bar, removable doors and roof. The bumper inset indicates the tailgate-mounted spare tire will be maintained of the new model. The designers of the Wrangler JL have not strayed so much from the previous model, but this model has some modern upgrades.
- A wrangler production for this sin t supposed to start until 2019 so that focus can be kept off the Wrangler JL before diversifying to another body.
- A manual Wrangler JL is in the works if the photos and reports are to believed. The automatic version might get a gearbox with eight different speeds. This means more productivity as compared to the present 5speed gearbox of the Wrangler JK.
The difference
- The front fenders are the location for turn signals and the grille is expected to bulge out more.
- The Wrangler JL appears to have a similar grille as the Wrangler YJ which leaned back, was moderated for the TJ models and completely vanished in the production of the JK model of 2007.
- The windscreen on the JL seems to be flatter than the curved option available on the Wrangler JK.
- The door sizes and general form of the JL Unlimited will be maintained, but door hinges will be redesigned to be exposed
- The front fender flares might have a pocket-sized scoop just behind it.
- New taillights feature a wrap-over design.
- The Wrangler JL will have more weightlessness than previous version owing to the possible use of aluminum parts.
What happened
The all-new Wrangler JL is the updated generation of the Wrangler series that started back in 1945 with the CJ Jeeps. After up to 10 years in production, the former model, Wrangler JK/JKU will be giving way for the Wrangler JL and JL Unlimited edition, probably a truck too. Many features have been upgraded as appearance has been modernized, but the Wrangler JL bears a lot of similarities with the Wrangler JK.
INTERESTING FACT: one of the handfuls of SUVs left with a 6-speed manual transmission as a standard is the Jeep Wrangler.
What changed
- The new Wrangler JL is expected to come with different features like revised aerodynamics, aluminum body panels or other lightweight materials, a lighter and stronger frame as well as better drivetrains.
- The Wrangler JL appears to maintain the round headlights, but those are now compressed into the outer grille slot edges which were last seen on the CJ model from 1945-1986.
- A Wrangler pickup is rumored, and the name might be Scrambler.
- Different engines are expected to be available for the Wrangler JL model.
- The Pentastar engine from the Fiat Chrysler is the possible first choice for this model buy a 4cylinder engine is being developed for this too. With direct fuel injection, aluminum block and a changeable timing valve, the 2.0L engine might have up to 300hp.
